Huddle Room Size: Dimensions, Capacity and What Fits in 100 Square Feet
Real dimensions for 2, 3, 4 and 6 person huddle rooms in metric and imperial: table sizes, chair clearance, door swing, screen to viewing distance, camera coverage, and why the glass box gets stuffy in twenty minutes.
"How big is a huddle room?" is one of those questions where every result is a blog post that says "small, typically 2 to 6 people" and then changes the subject. Nobody gives you a number you can put on a floor plan. So here are the numbers, in metric and imperial, with the reasoning attached so you can adjust them for your own building rather than trusting a table.
What follows is the specification: minimum viable footprint for 2, 3, 4 and 6 people, the table that fits, how much room a chair needs behind it, where the door swing eats your floor area, how far back the last seat can be from the screen, what the camera can actually see, why small glass rooms fail acoustically, and why they get stuffy faster than you expect. Then the practical bit: what happens when you cut one 12-person boardroom into two or three of these.
The floor area, by headcount
These are usable internal dimensions, wall face to wall face, and they assume a door, a wall-mounted display, and chairs people can actually get into. Add nothing for corridor. Subtract nothing for optimism.
- 2 people. 5.0 to 6.0 m² (55 to 65 sq ft). About 2.2 m by 2.5 m (7 ft 3 in by 8 ft 2 in). Table 800 by 800 mm (32 by 32 in), or a 900 mm round.
- 3 people. 7.0 to 8.5 m² (75 to 90 sq ft). About 2.5 m by 3.0 m (8 ft 2 in by 9 ft 10 in). Table 1200 by 800 mm with one seat at the end.
- 4 people. 9.0 to 11.0 m² (100 to 120 sq ft). About 3.0 m by 3.3 m (9 ft 10 in by 10 ft 10 in). Table 1200 by 800 mm (48 by 32 in), two seats each side.
- 6 people. 14.0 to 16.5 m² (150 to 180 sq ft). About 3.4 m by 4.2 m (11 ft 2 in by 13 ft 9 in). Table 1800 by 900 mm (72 by 36 in).
The 4 person case is the one worth memorising, because 100 square feet is the number people quote and it is genuinely the floor rather than the target. At 100 sq ft you get four seats and no slack. At 120 sq ft the fourth person can stand up while someone is sitting behind them.
For calibration in the other direction: Microsoft's own guidance for a traditional meeting space seating up to 10 people is approximately 25 feet wide by 14 feet deep, which is 350 square feet. That is 35 square feet per person including the AV zone. A huddle room at 25 to 30 square feet per person is tighter, and it gets away with it because there is no AV rack, no long table, and no seat that is far from the screen.
Where the area actually goes
Chair clearance
A chair needs roughly 450 mm (18 in) to be pushed back enough to sit down, 900 mm (36 in) for someone to stand up and turn, and 1200 mm (48 in) for another person to walk behind a seated one. In a huddle room you should design to 900 mm behind every chair. Twelve hundred is a luxury you cannot afford in 9 m².
That 900 mm figure is not arbitrary. The ADA Standards set 36 inches (915 mm) as the minimum clear width for an accessible route, so if the gap behind a chair is the only way to reach a seat, 900 mm is where the argument ends.
The door
An inward-opening door with a 900 mm leaf sweeps about 0.6 m² of floor that nothing can occupy. In a 9 m² room that is seven percent of your area gone to a hinge. Two fixes, in order of preference:
- Hang the door to open outward, if the corridor is wide enough and the fire strategy allows it.
- Use a sliding or pocket door. More expensive, and worse acoustically, which matters more than people think (see below).
Whatever you do, the door opening itself needs 32 inches (815 mm) of clear width minimum under the ADA Standards, measured between the face of the door and the stop with the door open 90 degrees. A 900 mm leaf gets you there with very little to spare once you account for the door thickness.
The screen
A wall-mounted display needs about 100 mm of depth including the bracket, plus a clear zone in front of it where nobody sits. Do not put a chair with its back against the screen wall.
Screen size and how far back the last seat can be
AVIXA's DISCAS standard is the rigorous way to do this, and it is worth reading if you are specifying more than a handful of rooms. It works from image height, viewer distance, and the height of the smallest element you need people to read, with separate acuity factors for basic decision making (200) and analytical decision making (3438).
The practical simplification for a huddle room: the farthest viewer should be no more than about 4 times the image height for content with small text, and no more than about 6 times the image height for slides and video calls.
Worked through for common displays. On a 16:9 panel the image height is the diagonal multiplied by roughly 0.49:
- 43 inch display. Image height about 0.54 m. Farthest seat 2.1 m for detailed content, 3.2 m for calls.
- 55 inch display. Image height about 0.68 m. Farthest seat 2.7 m for detailed content, 4.1 m for calls.
- 65 inch display. Image height about 0.81 m. Farthest seat 3.2 m for detailed content, 4.9 m for calls.
Compare that against the room depths above and the answer falls out: a 4 person room at 3.3 m deep is comfortable with a 55 inch display and marginal with a 43 inch one. A 6 person room at 4.2 m deep wants 65 inches if anyone will ever share a spreadsheet. This is the most common under-specification in small rooms, because 43 inch panels are cheap and look enormous when you are standing next to them in the corridor.
Camera field of view
Small-room cameras are wide on purpose, typically somewhere between 90 and 120 degrees horizontally. The geometry is simple: a camera with a 90 degree horizontal field of view sees a width equal to twice its distance from the subject. Mounted below the display on the end wall of a 3.3 m deep room, at 1.5 m from the near edge of the table it covers 3.0 m of width, which is the whole room.
That is the good news. The bad news is the near edge. Anyone sitting closer than about 0.8 m to a wide camera is cropped or distorted, so in a very small room the two seats nearest the screen are the worst seats on camera. If the room is regularly used for calls, put the table further from the screen wall than feels natural and accept a slightly deeper room.
Acoustics, and why glass boxes fail
The appealing thing about a glass meeting pod is that it looks light and does not block sightlines across the floor. The problem is that glass does two bad things at once.
First, it reflects. A room with four hard parallel surfaces and no soft material has a long reverberation time for its size, which makes speech inside sound harsh and makes microphones pick up more room than voice.
Second, and worse, the failures are usually at the joints rather than the glass: an unsealed door gap, a partition that stops at the ceiling tile instead of the slab, a shared return air path above the ceiling. Sound leaks through the smallest continuous opening, so a perfect glass panel with a 5 mm gap under the door performs like a room with a 5 mm hole in it.
If you are building glass pods, spend the money on the door seals and on taking the partition to the structural slab, not on thicker glass. And put something absorptive on at least one surface (a fabric-faced panel behind the screen, or an acoustic ceiling raft) so the room does not ring.
Ventilation, and why small rooms get stuffy
This is the failure people notice most and diagnose least. A 9 m² room with four people in it has a very high occupant density, and the volume of air in the room is tiny relative to what four people are producing.
ASHRAE 62.1 gives a combined outdoor air rate of 0.41 cfm per square foot for conference and meeting occupancy in its check table for the ventilation rate procedure. For a 100 square foot huddle room that is about 41 cfm (roughly 19 L/s) of outdoor air. The same standard lists a minimum primary airflow rate of 0.76 cfm per square foot for conference and meeting spaces, which is about 76 cfm through the room.
Two things go wrong in practice. One, small rooms are often carved out of open plan without anyone touching the mechanical system, so the new room inherits whatever diffuser happened to be in that ceiling grid, which was sized for open plan density. Two, the rates above are design rates at an assumed occupant density. Put six people into a room sized for four and you are outside the design assumption immediately.
The symptom is that the room is fine for twenty minutes and unpleasant at forty. If you have ever wondered why the small rooms get abandoned mid-afternoon, this is usually why, and no amount of booking policy fixes it.
Converting one boardroom into two or three huddle rooms
The arithmetic is tempting. A 12 person boardroom at roughly 33 m² (350 sq ft) contains, on paper, three 11 m² huddle rooms.
In practice you get two, sometimes two plus a phone booth. The area you lose goes to:
- Partition thickness. Two new partitions at 100 mm each is 0.7 m² gone in a 3.4 m span.
- Door swings and access. Three rooms need three doors, and if they all open off the same corridor you need corridor width to serve them.
- The awkward remainder. Rooms have to be rectangles that fit the window and column grid. The leftover 1.2 m strip becomes storage.
On cost, we are not going to quote a number, because the range is wide enough that any figure we gave you would be misleading. What we will tell you is the ranking of the cost drivers, because that is stable:
- Mechanical. Splitting supply and return so each new room is separately ventilated. This is almost always the largest line and the one that gets discovered late.
- Partitions and doors. Glass systems cost several times what stud and plasterboard costs, and perform worse acoustically unless well detailed.
- Electrical and data. Lighting circuits, switching, a socket at the table, a drop for the display.
- Fire and life safety. Detection and, depending on the room, sprinkler head positions.
Get three quotes and make sure all three price the mechanical work explicitly rather than as a provisional sum.
What you gain
The gain is concurrency, not floor area. One boardroom serves one meeting. Two huddle rooms serve two, and the meetings that actually occur in a 20 to 100 person office are overwhelmingly small. If your booking data shows an average of 2 to 4 attendees and a big room booked solid, the conversion pays back in scheduling capacity almost immediately. Get the data first. How many meeting rooms per employee covers the ratio side, and meeting room layouts covers what fits in each size once you have decided.

- Minimum usable footprints: 5 to 6 m² for 2 people, 7 to 8.5 m² for 3, 9 to 11 m² for 4, 14 to 16.5 m² for 6.
- 100 square feet is the floor for a 4 person room, not the target. 120 square feet is comfortable.
- Allow 900 mm (36 in) behind every chair, and 815 mm (32 in) clear door opening as the ADA minimum.
- Size the screen against the farthest seat: about 4 times image height for detailed content, 6 times for calls. A 3.3 m deep room wants 55 inches, not 43.
- Small glass rooms fail at the joints, not the glass. Seal the door, take the partition to the slab, add one absorptive surface.
- Ventilation is the usual reason small rooms get abandoned. ASHRAE 62.1 gives about 0.41 cfm per square foot combined outdoor air for conference and meeting occupancy, and carving rooms out of open plan rarely revisits the ductwork.
- A 33 m² boardroom realistically becomes two huddle rooms, not three. The mechanical work is the biggest cost driver.
